The University of Alberta Middle Eastern and North African Music Ensemble (MENAME) presents an afternoon of Afro-Arabian music, featuring dances by Khadijah and Belediyya Dance Company.
Sassy Saidi
Saidi dance can be done with or without assaya (cane), and with or without sagat (finger cymbals). In this class, Khadijah will lead us in combinations and choreography for sassy and modern Saidi dance that are traditionally grounded in Saidi technique. You will also learn the background and history of Saidi trends.
Nubian
Nubian people have their own language, culture, and traditions distinct from the Arab cultures of Egypt. You will not only learn about beautiful and social Nubian dance but also gain a glimpse into Nubian life in Egypt through this class with Khadijah.
Khaleeji Dance 101
“Khaleeji” is a word that covers the dance, culture, and music from the Persian/Arabian Gulf region, known as the “Khaleej.” Khadijah will not only teach about the dance but also about proper costuming, musicality, posture, history, background, and so much more! Be prepared to expand your understanding of Khaleeji!
Raks al Baladi vs. Shaabi
Through Khadijah’s expertise, you will do more than dance, you will explore the history and culture of these dances and have a better understanding of the dance and music styles known as “baladi” and “shaabi.”
